Searching the Vigo County jail roster

One search portal covers current Vigo County jail custody: the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office inmate search. The portal is publicly accessible with no login required for basic lookups.

1. Go to the Sheriff’s search page and select the Basic Search option.
2. Search by last name. Enter the full surname in the last-name field for the most reliable results.
3. Narrow results by adding a first name if the last name returns multiple matches. Partial first-name entries can help when spelling is uncertain.
4. Review the result list for booking date, charges, and bond status. Confirm numbers and hours before visiting or calling.

What the roster does (and doesn’t) show

The Vigo County Sheriff’s roster refreshes as booking data is entered by jail staff, but entries do not appear in real time. A booking processed during a shift change or overnight intake period may not display until staff complete the data entry. Plan for a lag between physical booking and roster visibility.

The roster shows current Vigo County jail detainees only. It will not display juveniles held in the county juvenile system, individuals held under sealed or expunged records, or anyone in federal custody at the United States Penitentiary, Terre Haute — a separate federal facility that does not share data with the county roster. People transferred to an Indiana Department of Correction state prison also drop off the county roster once the transfer is complete. Call the (812) 462-3226 — that’s the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office direct line. It’s a long night, and the phone is the fastest path right now. The line is staffed around the clock for custody questions, so calling at 11 PM or 2 AM will reach someone who can confirm whether your person is in the system.

The online roster may not show a fresh booking yet. That’s normal — data entry takes time after physical intake. Calling the Sheriff directly gets you a live confirmation without waiting for the roster to update. Ask specifically whether the person has been processed and assigned a booking number.

Bond is not set at booking. In Indiana, bond is typically addressed at first appearance, which can occur within 24 to 72 hours post-booking. Calling now tells you when that hearing is scheduled — not what the bond amount will be. Visitation will not be available tonight. That’s the hard part of the first night. Why might a person not appear on the roster right away?

Timing is the most common reason. A booking entered after a shift change or during a high-volume intake period may not display until staff complete data entry. Check back after a few hours before assuming the person is held elsewhere.

• Released after booking: Indiana allows cite-and-release and signature release for certain offenses. The person may have been booked, processed, and released before the roster was checked. The roster removes released individuals, so an absence can mean release rather than non-booking.
• Transferred to state custody: If the person was already serving time or has a detainer, they may have been transferred to an Indiana Department of Correction facility. Search the IDOC offender locator at the IDOC Offender Search.
• Federal custody: Arrests on federal charges go to federal detention, not the county jail. The county roster will not show them. Contact the U.S. Marshals Service or the federal facility directly.
• Neighboring county: If the arrest occurred near a county line, the person may be held in Clay, Sullivan, Parke, Vermillion, or Fountain County rather than Vigo.
