The Washington County Sheriff’s Office publishes an online inmate roster through its jail management system. Go to Washington County IN Sheriff and follow the roster link to see current bookings. The roster lists inmates held at the Washington County Jail in Salem and is updated by jail staff as bookings occur. Booking records are public under Indiana’s Access to Public Records Act (Ind. Code § 5-14-3).

Searching the Washington County jail roster
If you know the person’s name, the Sheriff’s online roster is the fastest starting point. The roster is linked directly from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office page on the county’s official site. A lower-confidence third-party mirror of the same data is also accessible at the Washington County IN jail tracker listing; use the Sheriff’s own site when possible.
- Open the Washington County IN Sheriff website and navigate to the inmate roster.
- Search by last name. The roster also supports filtering by booking date and displays the charge or charges associated with each booking.
- Confirm the full name, booking date, and listed charges match the person you are looking for before drawing any conclusions.
- If the name does not appear, note the date and time of your search — roster lag is addressed in the next section.
The Washington County public safety resources page on the county’s e-government portal also links to the roster and to the Indiana Department of Correction offender search for state-sentenced individuals.
What the roster does (and doesn’t) show
The Washington County jail roster refreshes as jail staff enter new bookings into the system — it is not a real-time feed. A booking entered during a shift change or a high-volume intake period may not appear for several hours after the physical arrest. Confirm numbers and hours before visiting or calling if you plan to follow up in person.
The roster shows only adults currently held at the Washington County Jail in Salem. It will not display juveniles, whose records are sealed by Indiana law. It does not show individuals held in federal custody, people who have already been released or transferred, or anyone serving a state sentence at an Indiana Department of Correction facility. For state-sentenced individuals, use the Indiana Department of Correction Offender Search. Court case information — including case numbers, hearing dates, and charges filed — is available separately through Indiana’s statewide court portal, MyCase.
If you’re reading this because someone was just booked tonight, the section below is for you.
If someone was just booked tonight
Call the Washington County Jail and Sheriff’s Residence at (812) 883-5999 (verify before calling) to confirm custody. That’s the fastest path tonight — the online roster may not yet show a booking that happened in the last few hours. The line is staffed around the clock for custody questions, so calling at midnight is the same as calling at noon for this purpose.
Bond is not set at booking. It’s a hard wait. A judge sets bond at first appearance, which in Indiana typically happens within 24 to 72 hours after booking. Calling the jail tonight can confirm whether your person is in custody and when first appearance is scheduled — but the deputy cannot tell you the bond amount before the hearing.
Visitation is not available the night of booking. That part is the hard part. Visiting hours begin the following day at the earliest; call the jail in the morning to ask about the current schedule and any registration requirements. The Washington County Jail administration office operates Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for non-emergency questions.
Your next-morning checklist — and mornings come faster than they feel like they will tonight. Call the Washington County Clerk’s office at (812) 883-5748 for case filing information once a case number has been assigned. Attend the first appearance if you can; bond conditions are set there. If you need an attorney, Indiana’s public defender locator is at the Indiana Public Defender Commission, and licensed attorneys can be found through the Indiana Roll of Attorneys.
If someone isn’t on the Washington County County roster
A name missing from the roster most often means the booking simply hasn’t been entered yet — jail staff process paperwork after the physical intake, and a gap of several hours is common for recent arrests. If you searched within a few hours of the arrest, check again before pursuing other paths.
- State IDOC transfer: If the person has an existing state sentence or was transferred to a state facility, search the Indiana Department of Correction Offender Search at Indiana DOC Offender / Incarcerated Locator.
- Already released: Bond may have been posted before the roster updated. Call the jail to confirm.
- Neighboring county: Arrests near county lines sometimes result in booking in an adjacent county — Jackson, Orange, Lawrence, or Scott County jails each maintain their own rosters.
- Federal custody: Federal arrests do not appear on county rosters. The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator covers federal facilities.
- VINELink custody notification: Register for automated custody-status alerts at Vinelink — VINELink covers Washington County and will notify you of release or transfer.
- Multi-state search: If you have reason to believe the person may be held in another Indiana county or another state entirely, the nationwide search tool in the next section may help surface records that local rosters cannot show.
For inmates in other counties or states
The Washington County roster covers only the local jail. A nationwide records search may help fill gaps that local portals often leave — it is designed to search across multiple jurisdictions and may include county, state, and federal custody data. Treat any result as a starting point for verification, not a confirmed custody record.

Why doesn’t a name appear on the Washington County inmate roster right after an arrest?
The roster updates as jail staff enter each booking into the system — it is not a live feed. A booking that occurred within the past few hours may not yet be visible. Search again after a few hours, or call the Washington County Jail at (812) 883-5999 (verify before calling) to confirm custody status directly.
Where can I search for a Washington County inmate who may have been transferred to a state facility?
The Indiana Department of Correction Offender Search at Indiana DOC Offender / Incarcerated Locator covers individuals serving state sentences at IDOC facilities statewide. It does not show county jail inmates or pretrial detainees. If the person is not on the Washington County roster and may have an existing state sentence, that is the correct next tool to check.
